They left school mid-day and never returned. The disappearance occurred in the mid-2000s, before surveillance cameras were everywhere and mobile phones provided constant location tracking. These two teenagers, who were 15 at the time, were supposed to be in biology class, but under the pretext of taking a walk, they left the classroom and vanished. No one expected that a regular school, a regular classroom, and a regular weekday would become a mystery. It was later discovered that their phones had been switched off 20 minutes after they left the classroom.
Nothing was heard from them after that. They were searched for over several months. The police conducted raids and questioned all potential witnesses, but many years passed before this story found any explanation. That year, the school was buzzing with the usual spring activity. Exams were approaching, there were several tests, and most students were preparing to move up to the next grade.
The teenagers in question were friends Liam and Sam. They both lived in the same neighborhood and took the bus to school. Their grades were fairly average, but they weren’t generally troublemakers. They didn’t have any obvious conflicts or skip class without apparent reason. So when the biology teacher gave them a short break to get some fresh air, he had no suspicion of what would happen.
They said they wanted to take a walk in the school garden to relax. However, half an hour later, the teacher realized the boys hadn’t returned. He asked in the hallway if anyone had seen Liam. Those passing by shrugged their shoulders.
The teacher decided to wait, thinking they would come back on their own, but they hadn’t shown up by the end of the class. When more than 60 minutes had passed and they hadn’t appeared in any class, the school administration contacted their parents and called the police. The initial reaction was that the teenagers had simply run away to take a day off.
Some teachers remembered that there was an important math test that day, and the boys didn’t like math class. Perhaps they had decided to skip the exam, but it soon became clear that they hadn’t returned home or to their friends’ houses. In the afternoon, Liam’s mother started to worry seriously because her son usually told her his plans.
It was almost 7 p.m. and she hadn’t heard from him. The phone kept ringing and then going silent. The police advised her not to panic yet, as anything could happen. Maybe they were out for a walk and their phone batteries had run out. But when Sam’s parents heard that their son had also disappeared, they immediately understood that something serious was going on.
The two boys, without any prior agreement, had given no sign of life, which was unlike them. The following morning, a missing persons report was filed for the two teenagers. The first thing the police did was search the area around the school. There was a small garden, several trees, and paths leading to the stadium. They found no signs of a struggle or other suspicious details.
They questioned the school security guard, who hadn’t seen anyone forcibly take the teenagers away. There were no cameras at the exits at that time, and the guard didn’t keep track of everyone who entered or left. If the boys had decided to leave on their own, no one would have stopped them.
The police asked him if he had seen any strange cars. He replied that there were always several teachers’ cars parked near the school, that sometimes parents came to pick up their children, but that he hadn’t seen anything unusual. Next, law enforcement officers visited the missing boys’ classmates. The students were surprised because they knew nothing about any plan to skip school.
However, someone remembered that Liam and Sam had talked about the possibility of skipping class, but nothing specific. One student suggested that they might have gone to the woods a couple of kilometers from the school. Students sometimes went there to smoke or just to hide from the teachers. The police immediately searched the area.
They walked the paths, questioned passersby and neighbors, but found nothing. Although the forest wasn’t very large, it wasn’t easy to search it thoroughly in a short time. Small groups of police officers and volunteers were organized and they combed a wider area. They found neither clothing, backpacks, water bottles, nor any other items that could belong to the missing children. The parents continued to hope that the children would return home on their own, but each day it became clearer that this wasn’t just a simple run-away. The police requested information from the mobile phone operators. The data showed that Liam’s phones were active for the first 20 minutes after…
