The aquarium was the girl’s favorite place. Every day she walked up to it, pressed her little hands against the glass, watched the colorful fish, and could stand there for ten minutes without moving. The dog was always by her side — calm, quiet, almost like a shadow watching over its little owner.

But that day, everything happened differently. As soon as the girl approached the aquarium, the Labrador suddenly tensed up, lifted its head, and barked sharply. It was as if something snapped inside him: in a single second, he rushed toward the girl, grabbed her overalls with his teeth, and pulled her down to the floor.

The girl didn’t understand what was happening. She screamed, fell down, and started crying louder than ever before. The dog was barking loudly too, standing over her.

Hearing the noise, the parents ran into the room. They saw their daughter on the floor, the dog over her, and everything seemed obvious in that moment: the dog had attacked the child. The father rushed forward, pushed the Labrador away, yelled at him, and raised his hand to strike.

Right under the aquarium, next to the wires, a tiny spark was flickering. The cable connected to the filter had started melting — a short circuit had occurred. One more second and the girl would have touched the exposed section. The dog had gotten there first.

The father froze, slowly lowered his hand, and whispered: “Oh my God…”

After they unplugged the aquarium and made sure the danger was gone, the Labrador was still sitting next to the girl, panting heavily and refusing to leave her side — even after being unfairly scolded.

The parents apologized to the dog, but the girl remained afraid of him for many months. Every time the Labrador came near, she backed away and hid behind her mother.

And the dog simply lay down on the floor, waited quietly, and looked at her with the same eyes that had once saved her life.

Only after a long time did the girl allow him to come close again — and for the first time since the incident, she timidly touched his ear. And the Labrador just blinked, as if saying: “I never left.”
