Nicky Weaver was a selfish, spoiled girl, and if we were to be 100% honest, we\u2019d have to lay the blame at her mother Sophia\u2019s door. After all, Sophia had done the spoiling, lavishing love, attention, and all she could afford on Nicky\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nicky was an only child, and Sophia\u2019s husband had left her when she\u2019d been severely injured in a car crash when their child was just three years old. Sophia had survived, but her injuries left her crippled and disfigured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With her husband gone, she focused all her attention and love on her beautiful, bright little girl. But Nicky, instead of blossoming into a kind, generous person, had become demanding, nasty, and hurtful. But life had some lessons in store for her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It had all started in high school when Nicky suddenly noticed that Sophia didn\u2019t look like everyone else\u2019s athletic, pretty mom. Sophia had a limp, and a terrible scar snaking down her neck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nicky realized she didn\u2019t want anyone to know that Sophia was her mother. She refused to allow Sophia to attend any of the school functions where her classmates might see her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLook mom!\u201d she\u2019d said to Sophia. \u201cI\u2019m the most popular girl in school and the prettiest \u2014 you don\u2019t LOOK like my mom!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sophia had swallowed her pain. She wanted Nicky to be happy, to be popular, to be everything she had never been, and so she agreed. She had watched her daughter\u2019s graduation from afar so as not to embarrass her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then Nicky went away to college, and during those years, Sophia had missed her dreadfully. She even managed to forget exactly how selfish and unfeeling her child could be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Nicky told her mother she had been offered a job in their hometown, Sophia had been delighted. Nicky was back, and she was living at home again! But if Sophia thought the distance would make Nicky sweeter, she was in for a surprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not long after she was back in town, Nicky started dating her boss\u2019s son, a handsome young man who also worked for his law firm. Nicky told her mother, \u201cThis is it, mom. George is the big time for me! No more poky little apartments and cheap clothes!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sophia was shocked. She ran a successful online business and she thought their apartment was very pleasant. She had always bought her daughter the best she could afford, and Nicky\u2019s dismissal of it all as \u2018cheap\u2019 and \u2018poky\u2019 hurt her feelings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Worse was to come when three months later Nicky came home with a diamond ring sparkling on her finger. \u201cHe proposed, mom!\u201d she cried. \u201cAnd of course, I said yes\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sophia smiled, happy for her daughter. \u201cI\u2019m so glad you found a young man you love\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLove?\u201d asked Nicky. \u201cSurely you don\u2019t think I\u2019m that stupid? You married for love and look at you now! I\u2019m marrying George and I\u2019ll be a good wife, as long as he gives me the life I want!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo\u2026\u201d Sophia asked timidly. \u201cWhen do I meet George and his family?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nicky looked sideways at Sophia and put on her best fake smile. \u201cOh, I\u2019ll organize something one of these days!\u201d She was thinking that she needed a place to stay until she married and it wouldn\u2019t do to let her mother know her real plans too soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But a few weeks later, George told Nicky he wanted to see where she lived and meet her mother. Nicky thought quickly. \u201cHun, you know my mom is a businesswoman, she\u2019s away on a trip right now\u2026But you can come for dinner!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That afternoon, Nicky came home and told her mother: \u201cListen, you have to make an amazing dinner cause George is coming over!\u201d Sophia was delighted and started making dinner and set a beautiful table for three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nicky came out of her bedroom looking like a movie star and stared at the dinner table. \u201cThree?\u201d she asked. \u201cWhat are you thinking, mom? It\u2019s only George and I having dinner!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNicky,\u201d gasped Sophia. \u201cThis is my house, I\u2019m your mother\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNot tonight!\u201d Nicky said coldly. \u201cTonight you\u2019re the maid. I can\u2019t have him looking at you and deciding he doesn\u2019t want to marry into the family!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sophia was utterly humiliated when George arrived and Nicky introduced her as the maid, and a few minutes later, dismissed her telling her she need only return in the morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sophia took her handbag and left. She was devastated, and called her best friend Anne and asked if she could come over. Anne, a pretty and lively woman who lived in the same building, welcomed Sophia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s happened?\u201d Anne asked when she saw Sophia\u2019s unhappy face. Sophia didn\u2019t want to tell her, but eventually, the whole story came out and Anne was furious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou let this girl trample all over you!\u201d cried Anne angrily. \u201cShe deserves a good lesson! You sleep here tonight, and tomorrow I\u2019m fixing Miss Nicky for good!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nicky spent a lovely evening with George. They ate the delicious dinner Sophia had prepared, danced, and spent the night together. But the early morning would bring Nicky a huge surprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

George and Nicky were still sleeping when the front door opened and a cheery voice shouted, \u201cNicky! It\u2019s me! I\u2019m home!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nicky wrapped herself in a dressing gown and stumbled to the sitting room where Anne was standing, beautifully dressed and carrying a suitcase. \u201cGood morning sweet daughter!\u201d she cried happily to Nicky\u2019s amazement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At that moment, George walked in. \u201cHello!\u201d said Anne, shaking George\u2019s hand enthusiastically, \u201cSo you\u2019re the man who\u2019s finally taking Nicky off my hands! I must tell you I\u2019m so relieved!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

George was stunned and Nicky was horrified but Anne was on a roll. \u201cOh, my poor man, you have no idea what you are setting yourself up for! She\u2019s so demanding! Everything has to be just so, and always her own way!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh yes, it is!\u201d said Anne. \u201cAnd I\u2019m so glad you\u2019re rich, George! From what Nicky told me you can afford to buy her all the things she believes she deserves! Money is the key to happiness she always says, and you\u2019ve got plenty!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI never\u2026\u201d gasped Nicky, but George was looking at her with an odd look on his face then he quietly went back into the room, put on his shoes, and walked out of the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou stupid woman!\u201d screamed Nicky at Anne. \u201cWhat have you done?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nicky was devastated. Never before had anyone spoken the truth outright to her face. She started thinking about all that she\u2019d done and how she\u2019d treated her mother and she felt deeply ashamed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nicky humbly went to Anne\u2019s house to beg her mother\u2019s forgiveness and asked her to come home. It was the beginning of Nicky\u2019s transformation. She wasn\u2019t always sweet, of course, and she did have a few back slips once in a while, but she was a kinder and more loving daughter to Sophia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
