Donna had planned to marry the wealthy Brian no matter what it took, but when she arrived at the church, she saw him marrying another woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Donna hated her cousin Gwen. Donna was the prettiest of the two by far, but while her mother had married a poor man, Gwen\u2019s mom had married a rich lawyer so their lives were very different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gwen went to a fancy college, had the finest clothes, had her first convertible on her 16th birthday, while Donna had nothing! Yes, Donna hated Gwen, but she never let her know because Gwen was generous and kind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanks to Gwen, Donna went to the best parties, got to wear her cousin\u2019s new dresses (sometimes first), and enjoyed expensive vacations. The truth is that Gwen thought Donna was her best friend \u2014 until she stole the man she loved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gwen had known Brian Finley all her life and that was how long she\u2019d been in love with him. He was the son of her father\u2019s best friend, and he\u2019d spent the last seven years studying medicine in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDonna!\u201d Gwen gasped. \u201cBrian is back and he\u2019s going to be at the dance at the country club tonight!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWho\u2019s Brian?\u201d asked Donna, looking through her cousin\u2019s dresses, deciding what she was going to wear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gwen blushed. \u201cBrian and I\u2026He was my first boyfriend when I was 16\u2026Then he went overseas to study, and we\u2019ve been writing to each other. I love him, and he loves me!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow come you\u2019ve never told me about him before?\u201d asked Donna suspiciously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gwen looked embarrassed. \u201cI thought you\u2019d laugh at me, holding a torch for this guy for seven years\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s sweet!\u201d Donna said. \u201cTell me all about him!\u201d Donna listened attentively as Gwen talked about Brian, his parents, how clever he was, and how he was going to be one of the best surgeons in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He sounded perfect to Donna, exactly what she\u2019d been looking for herself! A rich, handsome man with rich parents! She smiled sweetly at her cousin. \u201cOh, you must introduce me tonight!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Donna planned her entrance into the dance with an eye for maximum impact. She always arrived late, of course, it was her trademark. She liked walking in and having everyone looking at her \u2014 there was so much to admire!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was wearing a stunning red dress (Gwen\u2019s dress) which clung to every curve of her voluptuous body and left a lot of cleavage on display. Her long dark hair tumbled down her back and her dark eyes sparkled with promise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She walked in and the room literally stopped. In the middle of the crowd, she saw Gwen looking pretty in a pink taffeta gown standing next to a tall, handsome man, and she smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She ran over and kissed Gwen on the cheek affectionately. \u201cGwen! You look so pretty!\u201d Then she turned her sultry gaze on the man she knew was Brian Finley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAren\u2019t you going to introduce me?\u201d she asked, but before Gwen could say a word, Donna had already taken Brian\u2019s hand and was drawing him onto the dance floor where a slow romantic song was playing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gwen stood there watching as her cousin wound her arms around Brian\u2019s neck and pressed her body to his. She never saw them again that evening. They simply vanished and she went home and cried herself to sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next day Donna phoned, apologized, and said, \u201cI\u2019m so sorry, Gwen, but Brian was so irresistible! I tried to tell him that I couldn\u2019t come between you, and he said\u2026He said it was a kid\u2019s thing, a schoolgirl crush\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gwen was devastated, but she smiled bravely and wished Donna and Brian well. That summer, Brian and Donna were the hottest of couples, and three months later, they announced their engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEngaged?\u201d asked Gwen, stunned, \u201cBut Brian, you\u2019ve barely known her three months!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI HAD?\u201d asked Gwen. \u201cI thought you cared about me too!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brian looked embarrassed. \u201cI did, I do\u2026But Donna\u2019s made me see there\u2019s so much more between a man and a woman!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was a done deal, so Gwen decided to do the best she could with a bad situation and even offered to buy her cousin a wedding dress. Donna was sweetly grateful and asked Gwen to be her bridesmaid. \u201cI want you by my side when I marry Brian,\u201d she said and smiled. \u201cIt\u2019s only right!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It broke Gwen\u2019s heart but she agreed. Donna picked the most expensive dress in the shop, even though Gwen preferred a delicate, simple sheath in satin and lace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI want to make an entrance Gwen,\u201d she said, \u201cYou know how important that is to me.\u201d And so was Brian\u2019s money, because Donna had a plan and a man waiting in the wings, a long-time lover who was unfortunately as poor as she was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The weeks before the wedding rushed by, and before they knew it, it was the rehearsal dinner. Of course, Donna was late as usual, and Brian, who was impatient to see his bride, went outside to wait for her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was by the restaurant\u2019s door when he heard a familiar voice: \u201cBaby, this is my golden ticket. The guy hasn\u2019t even asked me to sign a prenup! He thinks I\u2019m pregnant, so in a few weeks, I\u2019ll fake a miscarriage\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd then it\u2019s you and me on a tropical beach with a fat settlement!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brian turned around and his breath caught. It was Donna, standing in the shadows, talking to someone else, planning to cheat on him even before their wedding!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brian\u2019s first impulse was to call her out, cancel the wedding, then he had a better idea. He went back to the party and pretended everything was just fine. He touched Gwen on the shoulder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou were right about everything,\u201d he said quietly. \u201cShe\u2019s a liar. She made me believe what I felt for you was childish, but right now all I feel is relief that I\u2019m not marrying her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou\u2019re not marrying her?\u201d asked Gwen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut the rehearsal dinner, the wedding\u2026\u201d Gwen said. \u201cWhat are you going to do?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have this idea, and I hope you agree,\u201d Brian whispered. \u201cListen\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next morning Donna put on her lavish wedding gown and her cathedral veil with her mother and her sister\u2019s help. \u201cI don\u2019t like the hair,\u201d she told the hairdresser. \u201cDo it again!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An hour and a half later Donna was at the cathedral doors, waiting to make her grand entrance. \u201cOpen the door,\u201d she hissed at the usher. \u201cCan\u2019t you see I\u2019ve finally arrived?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man looked confused, but he obeyed. The huge doors swung inwards, and Donna heard the words: \u201cYou may kiss the bride!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There, at the altar, was Brian, and opposite him, looking radiant in a wedding dress was GWEN! Brian was marrying GWEN? Donna screamed and threw down her bouquet, but nobody even noticed her or looked her way. Everyone was cheering Gwen and Brian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Donna had played a dirty game and she lost. And she didn\u2019t just lose her bridegroom, she lost her cousin\u2019s friendship and access to all that money. Donna discovered that if she wanted things, she had to work \u2014 and work hard \u2014 for it all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
