A poor man is stunned to wake up one morning and find his father\u2019s old trailer in his yard with a note from his older brother \u2014 but the despised inheritance ends up making his fortune.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark Kendrick was struggling. When he\u2019d first married, it looked as if life would run smoothly. He had a good job, and so did his wife, Sally. But then back in 2008, his wife lost her job as a chef when the restaurant she worked in closed down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Left with a huge mortgage, two children, and one salary, the Kendricks had struggled. When Mark\u2019s father passed away in 2019, his estate \u2014 which was substantial \u2014 had all gone to his brother, Jim. It seemed that Mark just couldn\u2019t catch a break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even though Mark never told anyone, even Sally, the conditions of his father\u2019s will had hurt him deeply. Mark was the younger brother by nearly 20 years and the child of his father\u2019s second marriage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He understood that the company and the big house his father had lived in had once belonged to Jim\u2019s deceased mother and were his by right \u2014 but Mark had thought his dad would leave him some token of his esteem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back when Mark was small, his father had often played hide-and-seek games with him. The little boy would often find a little treat under his pillow with a note \u2014 chocolate or a piece of candy \u2014 and the note always said: \u2018Daddy loves you, Mark.<\/em>\u2018<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They\u2019d go off on vacation \u2014 Mark, his mom, and his dad \u2014 on their old trailer. His half-brother, Jim, would never go. He\u2019d always turn up his nose at their \u2018trashy trailer\u2019 and go off with his fancy college friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trio would drive around the back roads of America stopping whenever they fancied a town\u2019s name, and the first meal they made was always his dad\u2019s spicy clam chowder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those vacations were Mark\u2019s fondest memories of his childhood, and they had ended when his mother passed away, a victim of cancer when Mark was fifteen. After that, the trailer just sat in the backyard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Memories of our family and the good times we spent together are the most precious things we have.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Mark\u2019s dad had withered away to a shadow of his former self and became almost a recluse. In his last years, he refused to see anyone at all, even his sons and grandchildren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, two years after his dad\u2019s death, Mark woke up to find the old trailer parked in his driveway! He immediately phoned his brother. \u201cJim, what\u2019s going on?\u201d he asked. \u201cYou left the trailer here?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His brother was abrupt. \u201cThe old man wanted you to have that piece of junk,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd it\u2019s taking up space I need. So you take it and throw away your own trash!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJim,\u201d Mark asked quietly. \u201cWhy can\u2019t we be friends?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou ask me why?\u201d asked Jim bitterly. \u201cHe loved you more than he ever loved me, he spent more time with you on that stupid trailer than he ever did with me. Tha\u2019s why!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark hung up the phone sadly, then he went outside and climbed into the old trailer. It was sadly neglected and would need a lot of work before it could be used again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark sat on his old bed and tested the mattress. He\u2019d have to get a new one. Then, out of old habit, he stuck his hand under the pillow. To his surprise, he felt something there!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was an envelope under the pillow with his name on it! He opened it and found a bank book for an account with a balance of over $60,000! In the envelope was a recipe for his dad\u2019s chowder, and a note.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The note read: \u201cMy dear Mark, this recipe and the memories of the good times we shared are all I have to leave you. I hope this money will come in handy. It\u2019s not much, but it may help to smooth your way. Remember me. Daddy loves you, Mark.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark had tears in his eyes. He took the bank book and showed it to Sally. \u201cThat\u2019s not bad\u2026\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s not the millions that Jim got, but it will help. You can sell that old trailer too. That should bring in a little more money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark was shocked. \u201cI\u2019m not selling my dad\u2019s trailer!\u201d he cried. \u201cThat\u2019s out of the question!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell I don\u2019t want that piece of junk just sitting in the front yard!\u201d cried Sally crossly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark sat on the front porch looking at that trailer for hours. It certainly needed a lot of work\u2026 Then he pulled his dad\u2019s recipe out of his pocket and stared at it. \u201cSally!\u201d he cried. \u201cCome here! I have an idea!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat is it, Mark?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou know how you always said you wanted your own restaurant?\u201d he asked excitedly and pointed at the old trailer. \u201cThere it is!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAre you mad?\u201d gasped Sally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo!\u201d Mark said. \u201cListen, we transform that old trailer into a mobile restaurant\/ food truck. We make that amazing clam chowder of my dad\u2019s\u2026 We\u2019ll paint it bright, happy colors and string up lights\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat could work,\u201d said Sally thoughtfully. \u201cIf we can afford the licenses\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They could and they did. Pretty soon, people were coming from all over the city to eat Pop\u2019s Chowder and Mark had to give up his job to help Sally. They started a franchise, and before long, there were Pop\u2019s Chowder food trucks all over the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark was delighted. His father\u2019s memory was honored every day, with every bite a satisfied customer took of that amazing clam chowder. And thanks to that legacy, he was taking good care of his family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark called Jim and invited him and his family to join them for a family lunch at the old refurbished trailer. Jim came and ate the chowder and the two brothers made peace, just as their father would have wanted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
