A married woman comes to her neighbor\u2019s rescue and helps her home-deliver her baby, only to discover that the father of the child is her own husband.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sarah Harper had known Erica Vernon for over six years. The Vernons had moved in next door the same week as Sarah and her husband Kieran \u2014 both couples were newlyweds and they\u2019d fallen into an easy friendship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But within a year or two, Sarah realized the Vernons were in trouble. Lester Vernon seemed to be jealous and suspicious and made his poor wife\u2019s life a living hell. Sarah pitied Erica, who was as faithful to her husband as she was to Kieran \u2014 or so Sarah thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Things became more and more unpleasant as time went on. The screaming fights from next door became more and more raucous, and the two couples stopped going out together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sarah would often see Erica looking weepy and unhappy, and even though Lester was always pleasant and polite to Sarah, he never gave her a chance to speak up for her friend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One day Sarah ran into Lester at the supermarket and decided to take the bull by the horns. \u201cLester,\u201d she said carefully, \u201cI know it\u2019s none of my business but I hate to see you two so unhappy. Have you thought about couple\u2019s counseling? Erica loves you so much\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lester looked at her for a long moment, then he said, \u201cListen, Sarah, if I were you I wouldn\u2019t defend Erica. You think she\u2019s your friend, but she isn\u2019t.\u201d And with that, Lester turned his back and walked away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just three weeks later, Lester walked out on Erica, and Sarah was horrified to discover that her friend was three months pregnant. \u201cBut Erica, did you tell him?\u201d Sarah asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The truth always comes out in the most unexpected ways.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Erica couldn\u2019t stop crying. \u201cI did, Sarah, but he said it wasn\u2019t his, that I\u2019d been cheating! I can\u2019t have this baby on my own, I can\u2019t!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sarah raised her chin resolutely. \u201cYou won\u2019t be! I promise you, Kieran, and I will be with you every step of the way!\u201d Erica threw her arms around Sarah, sobbing with gratitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That evening, Sarah told Kieran what was happening next door. \u201cI told poor Erica that we\u2019d be with her, help her through her pregnancy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kieran didn\u2019t look the least bit thrilled. \u201cHonestly Sarah, I wish you wouldn\u2019t be so impulsive! It\u2019s a huge responsibility, and I don\u2019t even know that woman that well!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve been living next door to her for six years, Kieran!\u201d Sarah exclaimed. \u201cShe\u2019s my best friend and I thought you liked her!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNot really,\u201d Kieran said. \u201cShe\u2019s OK, I guess, but she\u2019s always been more your friend than mine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh honey,\u201d Sarah said tenderly, wrapping her arms around her husband\u2019s neck and kissing him. \u201cPlease be nice to the poor girl, she has no one!\u201d Cunningly, Sarah nibbled at the side of her husband\u2019s neck, at a sensitive area he called his \u2018lucky bump.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou minx,\u201d Kieran growled. \u201cYou always know how to convince me!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sarah giggled and gave the \u2018lucky bump\u2019 a lick. \u201cYour mom told me it\u2019s the Harper men\u2019s only weakness and I\u2019d better take full advantage!\u201d The rest of the evening ended in love-making, and Kieran agreed to help Erica as much as they could.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So it was Sarah who accompanied Erica to all her doctor\u2019s appointments and her scans, to the nutritionist and to the Lamaze classes, and even to the natural childbirth course that promised to have mom and helpers ready to usher the baby into the world without medical help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNot that I intend to have this baby anywhere but a hospital with lots of painkillers!\u201d Erica said. \u201cBut it\u2019s good to be prepared!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it was a good thing too because one afternoon Erica phoned Sarah gasping. \u201cSarah, I think it\u2019s time!\u201d she cried. Sarah rushed over immediately and was shocked to find her friend in a pool of liquid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYour water has broken!\u201d Sarah cried. \u201cI\u2019m calling the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hospital advised her that it would be at least half an hour if not more before the ambulance could be with them, so Sarah made Erica as comfortable as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She noticed that Erica\u2019s contractions were closer and closer together\u2026 She peeked and saw to her horror that the baby\u2019s head was crowning! \u201cErica,\u201d she cried, \u201cthe baby\u2019s coming!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe can\u2019t!\u201d Erica screamed, clutching at her belly. \u201cIt\u2019s supposed to take hours!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell,\u201d Sarah said. \u201cReady or not, he\u2019s on his way!\u201d And she ran to get hot water, a warm blanket, scissors, and some cord. Kneeling by Erica\u2019s spread knees, Sarah encouraged her to push.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sarah watched breathlessly as the baby emerged from Erica\u2019s straining body. She tenderly caught it and laid it on the soft blanket while she tied off and cut the umbilical cord \u2014 just like they had taught her at the natural childbirth class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then Sarah picked up the baby. \u201cIt\u2019s a boy!\u201d she cried to the exhausted Erica. \u201cA beautiful, perfect baby boy!\u201d Sarah started wiping the baby down gently, and she discovered that the baby wasn\u2019t quite perfect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the side of his neck was a small hard bump, a familiar bump. A \u2018lucky bump.\u2019 Looking down at the tiny innocent creature in her hands Sarah suddenly understood it all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLester\u2026\u201d she whispered. \u201cLester was right, wasn\u2019t he, Erica? You were having an affair and it was with my husband.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Erica gasped and tried to sit up. \u201cOh no, Sarah, never\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDon\u2019t lie to me, I have the proof right here!\u201d Sarah said raising the baby in her hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDon\u2019t hurt him!\u201d screamed Erica. \u201cYes, he\u2019s Kieran\u2019s. We\u2019ve been lovers for six years, I\u2019ll tell you anything you want, but don\u2019t hurt my baby!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI would never hurt your baby, Erica,\u201d Sarah said scornfully. \u201cI\u2019m not like you. I don\u2019t destroy other people\u2019s happiness.\u201d Sarah put the baby in Erica\u2019s arms and left her to wait for the ambulance on her own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That night, when Kieran arrived home, he found the house empty and silent. Sarah left him without a word and filed for divorce. It took her a long time to learn to trust again, but a few years later Sarah met a wonderful man and remarried.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She is a happy woman, and she and her husband are now expecting their second baby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
