Not once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Except by him\u2014my dog,&nbsp;<em>Bixby<\/em>.<br>Well, not in words, obviously.<br>But in the way he looked at me every morning like I still mattered.<br>Like I was still&nbsp;<em>his<\/em>&nbsp;person, no matter what.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve been through it all\u2014eviction, shelters turning us away because of \u201cno pets,\u201d nights curled up in alleys with just a tarp and each other. He never bolted. Never stopped wagging that little crooked tail when I came back with even half a sandwich.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One time, I hadn\u2019t eaten in two days. But then she pulled a photo from her bag\u2014me and Bixby, blurry, taken from a distance. A social worker had snapped it weeks earlier and sent it to a local outreach team that partners with animal clinics and transitional housing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m Jen,\u201d she said. \u201cWe have a room. Dog-friendly. You interested?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I didn\u2019t even answer at first.
