A man is accused of being the father of a baby abandoned on his doorstep and it cost him his marriage and his way of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kyle Greenbecker had spent a year working on an oil pipeline in Alaska, but finally, he was on his way back to his beautiful wife. He and Lisa had met in high school, and Kyle had never regretted marrying her at nineteen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe he was old-fashioned, but Kyle was proud that Lisa was the only woman he\u2019d ever been intimate with in his life. He didn\u2019t need or want another woman. It never occurred to him that Lisa might doubt him\u2014and for good reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the plane landed, Kyle collected his luggage and went out with the other passengers, scanning the crowd for Lisa\u2019s beloved face, but she wasn\u2019t there to pick him up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kyle figured she\u2019d probably been held up at work by an emergency. He sent her a quick text to say he was on his way home, but he didn\u2019t hear back. He hopped in an Uber and within the hour, he was at her front door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lights were on in the living room, but Lisa wasn\u2019t there. He walked to the kitchen and stopped in the doorway, stunned. A bassinet sat on the kitchen table, and Kyle could see a small arm waving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He took another step closer. There was a bassinet with a baby in it on his kitchen table! The child was looking at Kyle with that surprised look babies have, and Kyle was looking at him just as surprised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then he saw a folded piece of paper on the table next to the crib. He picked it up and unfolded it. Inside was another piece of paper with a message in handwriting he didn\u2019t recognize: \u201cYou\u2019ve had fun, now take responsibility for your child.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, the note addressed to him in Lisa\u2019s elegant handwriting read:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cKyle, yesterday I found that child on our doorstep with that note attached. I always suspected you were cheating on me during your business trips, but I didn\u2019t blame you for it\u2014after all, I had plenty of flings while you were gone\u2014but having someone else\u2019s burden on me is too much. I\u2019ve filed for divorce, and I sincerely hope I never see you again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPS And for the baby, don\u2019t worry, I only left when I saw you coming up the aisle. Enjoy your life, Kyle, I certainly intend to enjoy mine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kyle sat up and dropped his head into his hands. He couldn\u2019t believe this was happening to him. This child wasn\u2019t his, he\u2019d never cheated on Lisa, never! A soft cooing made him look up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The baby was waving his tiny hand in the air, so Kyle moved his own hand closer and, to his surprise, the child latched onto his index finger with incredible strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell, baby,\u201d Kyle said. \u201cI guess it\u2019s just the two of us, and I don\u2019t know what to do with you!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The baby cooed and gurgled again, then scrunched up his face alarmingly and turned bright red. \u201cOh my God!\u201d Kyle cried. \u201cWhat\u2019s going on?\u201d A certain smell quickly clued him in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, it was diaper time. But was there even a diaper? On the floor next to the table was a large backpack with several snap-fastened pockets he\u2019d never seen before. Kyle found a bewildering array of items inside, including diapers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He quickly Googled how to change a diaper and watched closely as a woman on YouTube demonstrated on a life-size doll how to change a diaper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kyle began to follow her instructions, but things didn\u2019t go so smoothly. The living doll of a woman didn\u2019t move her legs or dig her heels into the smelly, unmentionable contents of the dirty diaper! After wiping the baby, Kyle realized it was a girl, and he didn\u2019t know anything about girls!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI won\u2019t give you dating advice,\u201d he told the baby solemnly. \u201cBut I can teach you how to ride a bike.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kyle knew then that he intended to keep this baby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He picked up the freshly changed baby and said, \u201cYou need me, and I guess I need you too. So what do you say, little one?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kyle consulted the YouTube baby guru again to prepare the formula and placed the baby in the crook of his arm to feed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou need a name, you know that? How about\u2026 Celeste? Do you like that? Or Lily\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If anyone had told Kyle he\u2019d adjust to fatherhood so easily, he would never have believed it. Lily had her moments and her tantrums, but it all worked out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kyle considered Lily his own child and enrolled her in daycare. For him, her birthday was the day he found her. But it was on Lily\u2019s second birthday that Kyle\u2019s world came crashing down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A woman knocked on his door. \u201cI came for my baby,\u201d she said. Kyle just looked at her. She was tall, blonde, and thin, with enormous breasts that were obviously the work of a plastic surgeon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYour what?\u201d Kyle asks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A true parent is one who loves and cherishes their child.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy baby,\u201d she replied. \u201cI left her here two years ago? Sorry, but I was a little high and my boyfriend lives next door and I made a mistake. You know how it is!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSorry, I don\u2019t know what it\u2019s like because I\u2019ve never abandoned a child on someone\u2019s doorstep,\u201d Kyle said coldly. \u201cI\u2019d hurry if I were you, or I\u2019d call the police.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNow look here,\u201d the woman said abruptly. \u201cI figured I\u2019d made a mistake about a week later when Burt didn\u2019t take my calls, but now I need this baby!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDo you need her?\u201d Kyle asks angrily. \u201cWhy do you need her?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBurt just landed a Major League contract,\u201d the woman said. \u201cAnd this baby will ensure some of those millions land in my bank account!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kyle sent the woman away, but he had a feeling he wasn\u2019t done seeing her. And he was right. A week later, he was summoned to family court. A certain Miss Cherish Vegas was contesting the adoption of little Lily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suddenly, Kyle is covered in restraining orders, receiving visits from social services at odd hours of the day and night, and his friends and colleagues are being questioned. Cherish really wanted to get her hands on those millions!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, the day of the hearing arrived. Kyle nervously handed Lily over to the social worker for the duration of the hearing and went inside. Cherish was there, of course, and a tall, blue-eyed man was at her side in court. This one could only be the famous Burt!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cherish cries, whines, and tells the judge how much she misses and loves her baby, and how her crazy middle school years (now over and deeply missed) led her to entrust her to Kyle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The judge looked down at the papers in front of her. \u201cBy \u2018in her custody,\u2019 you mean on her porch, right, Miss Vegas?\u201d the judge asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cherish blushed. \u201cWell, I\u2019m still his mom! No one can deny that!\u201d she cried.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The judge looks at Burt. \u201cYou, sir, are you the father?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Burt jumps up and says, \u201cI guess I must be\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The judge glared at him. \u201cAre you ready and able to assume parental responsibilities for this child?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cherish exclaimed, \u201cOf course he is, Judge, he just signed a three million dollar contract to play ball\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh!\u201d cried the judge. \u201cFinally, the truth is out! Tell me, Miss Vegas, what name did you give your daughter?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA name?\u201d Cherish asks, confused. \u201cWhy, she\u2019ll have her dad\u2019s name, since he\u2019ll be paying child support!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kyle stood up. \u201cYour Honor,\u201d he said. \u201cMay I address the court?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYes, Mr. Greenbecker,\u201d said the judge. \u201cYou\u2019re welcome.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMadam, my daughter\u2019s name is Lily, and she is named after her father\u2014mine. From the moment this child came into my life, I have loved her, and she loves me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At that moment, Lily, who was playing with the social worker\u2019s collar, noticed Kyle standing up. \u201cDad!\u201d she cried, holding out her arms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell, ladies and gentlemen, it appears to me that the case has been decided by the main party,\u201d the judge said. \u201cI hereby vacate all custody claims for the child Lily Greenbecker and confirm the custody and adoption of Kyle Greenbecker.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That night, Kyle celebrated his victory in court, and he and Lily spent the evening catching lightning bolts in the backyard. \u201cStars!\u201d Lily cried. But for Kyle, the brightest star of all was his little girl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
