A young woman took to Reddit to share the story of something that had caused her to lose many a night\u2019s sleep. When she finally learned the truth, she knew that the very reason she was losing sleep was also the reason that her life was saved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Tara and her husband Eric first settled into married life, the euphoria of their newlywed phase was punctuated by the typical issues that test a young marriage: debates over personal space, disagreements on chores, and notably, clashes over home decor. Among these domestic disputes, one particular point of contention stood out\u2014a mysterious oil painting of a woman that Tara\u2019s husband adamantly insisted on keeping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The painting, apparently acquired at a rummage sale before Eric met Tara and with no known history, featured a young woman with blonde hair that cascaded over her shoulders like a waterfall, her attire a simple white cotton dress. The painting<\/a> was rendered in oil, which caught the light in a way that breathed life into it. Yet, despite her beauty, Tara found that the painting exuded an unsettling aura, especially since her husband had chosen to hang it prominently above their bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tara\u2019s unease with the painting was palpable. Its presence was ominous in their bedroom, and she often woke in the night feeling like she was being watched by the woman\u2019s piercing gray eyes. Her discomfort escalated to the point where she pleaded with her husband, Eric, to relocate the painting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tara tried to tell Eric that the painting did not fit in with their modern decor, with Eric replying that neither did Tara\u2019s FunkoPops, which were also on display in their bedroom. Tara conceded to this and allowed Eric to keep the painting in the bedroom. However, she was still losing sleep because of the painting, so she told Eric that if he moved the painting out of their bedroom, she would move her FunkoPops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He reluctantly agreed, moving it to the staircase, which only served to heighten Tara\u2019s anxiety as the painting seemed to follow her with its gaze. The situation reached a breaking point one sleepless night when Tara, sneaking out of bed for a late-night snack, was startled by the painting, mistaking it for an intruder in the dimly lit house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tara told Eric that the painting had scared her and this incident prompted a desperate plea to remove the painting entirely. Eric\u2019s subsequent decision to relocate the painting to his office was a temporary reprieve, but it also marked the beginning of a deeper mystery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tara noticed Eric spending an inordinate amount of time in his office, often locked away with the painting. However, she knew he had a big project at work and assumed he was spending his time completing it. She soon learned there was something more sinister at play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One evening, when Eric failed to join her for dinner, Tara\u2019s curiosity led her to his office, where she found him in a trance-like state, fixated on the painting. When Tara entered the office, Eric told her that he had just submitted his project and that everyone was happy with it and he was on his way down for dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tara decided not to say anything to Eric about the unease she felt at finding him staring at the painting. However, later that week she could no longer hold her tongue. After overhearing a work call that Eric was on, in which he said he had not finished his project because he had to take Tara to hospital after she fell down the stairs, she burst into his office and asked why he was lying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eric paled and hung up the phone, telling Tara that he needed an excuse for missing his deadline as his job was on the line. Tara asked if it was the same deadline he told her he had finished earlier that week. He confirmed that it was, which led Tara to tell him that his job was his business, but she felt like they had spent no time together that week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She asked if he had been working on the project all week or if he had simply been sitting in the office staring at the painting the entire time. Eric looked at Tara and simply said<\/a>, \u201cYou\u2019re jealous of her.\u201d Tara asked what Eric was talking about and he assured her \u201cYou shouldn\u2019t be, Tara. The painting makes her prettier than she was.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tara was shocked by her husband\u2019s words and asked if he was telling her that the painting was of someone she knew. He told her he had misspoken and he did not know the woman in the painting. However, Tara was not sure that her husband was telling her the truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Driven by a mix of fear and curiosity, Tara embarked on a clandestine investigation one night while Eric slept. She slipped out of their bedroom and into his office, where she took a photo of the painting on her phone. Utilizing a reverse image search, she unearthed shocking revelations, linking the painting to Anya Kelsing, a missing art student who had vanished under mysterious circumstances while on a hike with her boyfriend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anya had apparently gone missing when she and her boyfriend became separated after an encounter with a bear on their hike. Anya\u2019s backpack was found a mile away from where the bear sighting had occurred, but her body was never found. None of the articles made mention of her boyfriend\u2019s name, but Tara knew it had to be Eric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tara also learned that Anya was an art student, who had painted the self-portrait, which now hung in Eric\u2019s office. While reading about Anya, Tara heard footsteps coming toward the office and felt the need to hide from Eric. She slipped under the desk and began wondering why she hadn\u2019t made up some sort of excuse about why she was in the office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eric entered the office and called Tara\u2019s name, asking if she was in there. When he eventually crouched down and saw Tara under the desk, she screamed. Tara made a lame excuse that she had come in to look for a pen as she had forgotten she had a grocery list she needed to make.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eric told Tara that he didn\u2019t believe that was true, at which point Tara tried to lunge out from under the desk. As she did so, Eric grabbed her wrists and held her in place. He then asked Tara if she had figured out who the woman in the painting was and if that was the reason she was hiding from him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat did you do to her?\u201d Tara asked<\/a>. Eric laughed and sarcastically told Tara that it was nice that thinking her husband was a murderer was the first conclusion she jumped to. Tara tried to protect herself by saying she didn\u2019t think Eric had killed Anya, but wanted to know what happened and if the bear killed her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eric told Tara she should have left well enough alone, but that he was sorry she had to find out this way. He then lunged for her and dragged her out from under the desk. As Tara tried to free herself from Eric\u2019s grip, the painting fell and Eric wheeled around to look at it. Tara took this moment to run.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tara ran out of their house and into the street, where she screamed for help. Neighbors called 911 and when the police arrived, they arrested Eric for assault. When Tara told the police of her story, they began an investigation on Eric, which ended in them finding a pair of gold earrings hidden in his office drawer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The earrings were the same ones Anya was wearing on the day she went missing. At the time of posting, Tara revealed that the case was mounting against Eric and that she hoped Anya would get the justice she deserved. She also revealed that she felt the painting falling off the wall when it did was some kind of divine intervention from Anya to help her escape a similar fate.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
