To give you some background, I\u2019m an only child and the only granddaughter on my mom\u2019s side of the family. Growing up, I was super pampered and got lots of love and attention, especially from my grandparents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My grandma, who I call Grams, and my grandpa, Pop-Pop, have always been such a huge part of my life. Pop-Pop, who just turned 66 last month, is hands down the most adorable person I\u2019ve ever known.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\u2019s got a tough exterior like you\u2019d expect from any grandfather, but his heart is pure gold. Only his close friends and family get to see that side of him, and I\u2019m lucky to be one of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pop-Pop is Chinese-American and speaks perfect English with an American accent. He loves reading, playing golf, and has the best sense of humor; his pranks are legendary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last weekend, we decided to check out a new restaurant that had just opened in town. Pop-Pop loves trying new places and is always up for an outing, so we do this kind of thing a few times a month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We arrived at the restaurant and got settled in. It was a cozy little place with a modern, chic decor. Pop-Pop and I found a nice table by the window, where we could watch people passing by on the street. The menu looked pretty fancy, and we were excited to try out some new dishes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not long after we sat down, a waitress came over with our menus. She had this really condescending tone like she thought we couldn\u2019t understand English or something. She leaned in and said, very slowly, \u201cDO YOU NEED ANYTHING?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I could see Pop-Pop\u2019s eyes twinkle with mischief, but he kept his cool. He turned to the waitress and, matching her tone and volume, he very loudly said in a very exaggerated \u201cAsian\u201d accent, \u201cYES. I NEED HELP WITH THE MENU.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I almost burst out laughing, but I managed to keep it together. The waitress, however, didn\u2019t take it well. She rolled her eyes, muttering under her breath, \u201cUgh, Chinese geezer.\u201d She clearly thought we hadn\u2019t heard her, but we did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Initially, I saw a flicker of anger in Pop-Pop\u2019s eyes, but then that familiar sparkle returned. He adjusted his glasses and cleared his throat with dramatic flair. I waited anxiously to see what Pop-Pop had in store. Though I must admit, even I was shocked at how he handled the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCan you explain the menu to us?\u201d he asked, still using the exaggerated accent. \u201cDish by dish, drink by drink, dessert by dessert?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The waitress sighed, clearly annoyed, but she had no choice but to comply. She started going through the menu, listing each item. \u201cThis is the calamari: it\u2019s fried squid. This is the house salad: mixed greens with a vinaigrette\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pop-Pop interrupted her frequently. \u201cWhat\u2019s in the vinaigrette?\u201d he asked, making her explain the ingredients in painstaking detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd the calamari, is it fresh or frozen?\u201d Pop-Pop continued, raising an eyebrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUm, it\u2019s a mix of shrimp, mussels, and clams,\u201d the waitress replied, trying to keep her patience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pop-Pop nodded thoughtfully. \u201cMixed greens. Interesting. Is the dressing made here or bought from a store?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pop-Pop leaned back and smiled. \u201cCould you repeat that? I didn\u2019t quite catch it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The waitress sighed, \u201cIt is made in-house.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He nodded again, slowly. \u201cThank you. And how is the steak cooked?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAny way you like it,\u201d she said quickly, hoping to speed things up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh, I see. And what sides come with the steak?\u201d he asked, drawing out the interaction even further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMashed potatoes or fries,\u201d she replied, her voice flat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pop-Pop turned to me with a grin. \u201cViolet, do you prefer mashed potatoes or fries?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I could barely keep a straight face. \u201cI think mashed potatoes, Pop-Pop.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAh, good choice,\u201d he said, then turned back to the waitress. \u201cCould you tell me more about the desserts?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was a masterclass in patience and subtle revenge. At one point, the waitress gave me a desperate look, but I just shrugged, trying not to smile too much. She had no idea who she was dealing with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After going through nearly the entire menu and having the waitress repeat everything so many times that I literally lost count, Pop-Pop leaned back in his chair and looked at me. \u201cIT\u2019S NO GOOD HERE. WE MUST GO,\u201d he said loudly, still using the fake accent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We gathered our things and got up to leave. The waitress looked stunned, and for a moment, I felt a little bad for her, but then I remembered her rude comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we walked out, Pop-Pop switched back to his normal voice and said, \u201cViolet, let\u2019s find somewhere with better service.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We ended up at a cute little diner a few blocks away. The staff there was super friendly, and the food was amazing. Pop-Pop and I spent the rest of the evening chatting and laughing about the whole incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPop-Pop, you\u2019re incredible,\u201d I said between bites of my burger. \u201cThat was some top-tier revenge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He chuckled. \u201cSometimes people need a reminder not to judge others by how they look. It\u2019s a small world, and you never know what someone is capable of.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
