My husband, Dave, and I have been married for about three years. I pride myself on my cooking skills. I\u2019m no gourmet chef, but I\u2019ve never had any complaints \u2014 until recently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last Friday, I decided to make one of my favorite recipes: homemade lasagna. I spent hours preparing it, making sure everything was perfect. When it was finally ready, I served it up with a smile. I expected at least a \u2018thank you\u2019 from Dave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, he took one bite, made a face, and pulled out his phone. I thought he just took the photo because he photographs everything around. But in a second, I heard the sound of a text message arriving. Curious, I peeked over his shoulder and my heart sank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My blood boiled. \u201cDave, what the heck is this?\u201d I asked, my voice shaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He looked up, startled. \u201cWhat? Oh, nothing,\u201d he stammered, trying to hide his phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNothing? You just texted someone that my lasagna is barely edible and you miss your mom\u2019s cooking!\u201d I snapped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dave sighed. \u201cLook, I didn\u2019t mean it like that. I was just\u2026 I don\u2019t know, venting. It\u2019s not a big deal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNot a big deal?\u201d I couldn\u2019t believe my ears. \u201cDo you have any idea how much effort I put into this? If you didn\u2019t like it, you could have just told me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t want to hurt your feelings,\u201d he said defensively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBy telling me to my face, or by texting someone behind my back?\u201d I shot back. \u201cBecause I think this is way worse.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dave rubbed his temples. \u201cOkay, okay, I\u2019m sorry. It was a dumb thing to do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wasn\u2019t satisfied with his half-hearted apology, but I decided to drop it for the night. The next day, I had a different plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I told Dave that I had a work event and would be home late. In reality, I went to his mom\u2019s house. She was a wonderful woman and I wanted to ask her for advice. When I arrived, she welcomed me in with open arms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I sighed. \u201cIt\u2019s about Dave. He did something really hurtful yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She frowned. \u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I told her about the lasagna incident and showed her the message Dave had sent. She was shocked and immediately agreed to help me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My mother-in-law offered to cook up a storm in her kitchen. She made all of Dave\u2019s favorite dishes, but with a twist. She over-seasoned, undercooked, and generally made sure everything tasted awful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then she plated it all up beautifully, knowing Dave wouldn\u2019t be able to resist taking a picture. Then she called him and invited him for dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The house smelled delicious, even if I knew better. As she worked, she explained the plan in detail, her eyes twinkling with mischief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ll make the mashed potatoes too salty, the green beans half-cooked, and the chicken dry as a bone. He\u2019ll be so excited when he sees the spread, and then\u2026 well, let\u2019s just see what happens.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I couldn\u2019t help but laugh. \u201cYou really think this will work?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She winked. \u201cOh, honey, I know it will. Dave has always been a bit too sure of himself when it comes to food. This will be a wake-up call.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we set the table, my nerves started to ease. This was going to be interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Dave arrived, his eyes lit up at the sight of the delicious spread. He eagerly dug in, but with each bite, his face started changing. He looked confused and a bit scared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dave went pale as the realization hit him. He turned to me, standing in the kitchen doorway, and I said, \u201cI saw your message, Dave. If you have something to say about my cooking, say it to my face. I hope you enjoyed tonight\u2019s meal as much as I enjoyed making it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dave was speechless, and his mom chimed in, \u201cI didn\u2019t raise you to be disrespectful. You owe your wife an apology.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His eyes widened in horror as he realized what I was about to do. \u201cNo, please don\u2019t!\u201d he pleaded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I gave him a stern look. \u201cMaybe next time, you\u2019ll think twice before mocking someone\u2019s hard work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From that day on, Dave never complained about my cooking again, at least not behind my back. Whenever I cooked, he made sure to show his appreciation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we worked together to clean the kitchen, Dave kept apologizing and thanking me for the meal. I could see he was genuinely sorry, and it felt good to know that he had learned his lesson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I sighed, feeling some of my anger melt away. \u201cI appreciate the apology, Dave. But you need to remember that words can hurt. Next time, just be honest with me. We can work on things together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He nodded. \u201cI will. Thank you for giving me another chance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next morning, Dave made breakfast as a gesture of goodwill. He served me a plate of pancakes with a shy smile. \u201cI hope these are okay.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From that day on, Dave made a real effort to show his appreciation for my cooking. He never complained again, and our relationship grew stronger because of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
