Is that okay?” Trump asked Savannah, who was clearly moved by the announcement. He added, “I don’t know them, but give them my regards. I wish them a good life.”Later in the call, when Todd and Julie’s son Chase thanked the President for “bringing my parents back,” Trump replied, “Well, they were given a pretty harsh treatment based on what I’m hearing.”Todd & Julie Chrisley’s Charges ExplainedIn 2019, charges were filed against the celebrity couple for bank fraud and tax evasion. A federal Grand jury indicted them on 12 counts of conspiracy to commit bank and wire fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy to defraud the United States, and tax evasion.U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Buchanan said that the couple “defrauded banks out of tens of millions of dollars while evading payment of their federal income taxes.”“The Chrisleys defrauded financial institutions and the Federal Government through tax evasion and other fraudulent means in an effort to minimize their tax liability, but project an image of wealth,” said James E. Dorsey, Special Agent in Charge, IRS Criminal Investigation, Atlanta Field Office.Buchanan added that the couple and a former business partner submitted false bank statements and other documents to community banks in order to secure more than $36 million in personal loans. They allegedly spent the money on luxury items in an attempt to portray wealth. They reportedly obtained new fraudulent loans to repay the old ones, and were eventually forced to file for bankruptcy. The court estimated that the Chrisley’s were able to “walk away” from more than $20 million of loans. In addition, the couple reportedly didn’t file taxes for four years. After the charges were made public, Todd addressed the allegations, saying that the evidence presented to the jury contained documents forged by a former employee.“It all started back in 2012, when we discovered that a trusted employee of ours had been stealing from us big time,” he wrote, adding that the employee created fake documents, forged their signatures, and threatened other employees if they spoke out.Todd went on to defend himself and his wife, saying that they have nothing to hide or be ashamed of.“Not only do we know we’ve done nothing wrong, but we’ve got a ton of hard evidence and a bunch of corroborating witnesses that proves it,” Chrisley said. The Chrisleys’ Sentencing and IncarcerationDuring their sentencing, the jury felt that there was enough irrefutable evidence to convict Todd and Julie.Todd, who was 53 at the time, was found guilty of conspiracy to commit bank fraud, bank fraud, tax fraud, and conspiracy to defraud the United States. Julie, 49 at the time of her sentencing, was convicted of conspiracy to commit bank fraud, bank fraud, tax fraud, and conspiracy to defraud the United States. She also received wire fraud and obstruction of justice chargesTodd was sentenced to 12 years in prison, and Julie was sentenced to seven. Todd and Julie reported to prison in January of 2023.
