Dad always insisted on the same thing: \u201cYou smell awful, go take a cold shower. Here\u2019s the soap \u2013 only this.\u201d I followed his instructions without asking questions. The cold water cut my skin, and the smell of that piece was so strong that I felt dizzy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With each passing day, I felt worse: weakness, dry skin, sleepless nights\u2026 Mom remained silent. She was always silent, which was strange \u2013 we used to share everything with each other.<\/p>\n\n\n

He carefully turned the soap in his hands, showing the small print on the back of the packaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014 Look. Black on white: \u201cPesticide treatment.\u201d No wonder you feel sick.<\/p>\n\n\n

I sank to the edge of the cold bathtub, its tiled surface seemed to pull me to the ground. My heart was pounding so loudly I could barely hear his words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anger, betrayal, fear \u2013 everything mixed inside me into one knot. Why did my dad make me use this? Why was mom silent?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My boyfriend sat down next to me and gently wrapped his arms around my shoulders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
