I\u2019ve been living alone for several years. My husband passed away recently, and my children have moved away and don\u2019t visit often. My only constant companion is my dog \u2014 a golden retriever named Bonya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She\u2019s smart, calm, and sensitive. She has never raised the alarm without a reason. We understood each other almost without speaking \u2014 and that\u2019s exactly why her behavior concerned me.<\/p>\n\n\n

What we saw was unexpected: behind the drywall was old, blackened wiring. The insulation had almost completely burned off, and in some places the metal was already exposed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the wires was sparking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou were incredibly lucky,\u201d the technician said. \u201cA little more time and your house could have caught fire.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later he explained that it was old aluminum wiring that hadn\u2019t been replaced during the last renovation. Someone had simply covered the dangerous spot with drywall to avoid the cost.<\/p>\n\n\n
