At Liza\u2019s funeral, a heavy silence hung in the air, broken only by muffled sobs and the dull barking of a dog pulling toward the coffin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The girl\u2019s grandfather stood still, hands shoved deep into the pockets of his old coat, staring at the white coffin lid under which his only granddaughter rested. She had passed suddenly, far too soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dog paced back and forth, howling, as if it couldn\u2019t accept it. Everyone thought it was out of grief. But the old man sensed something was wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The grandfather stepped toward the coffin. The people around him began to whisper:<\/p>\n\n\n

\u2013 Spare yourself, please!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her fur was disheveled, her eyes closed. Dead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The animal had likely slipped into the coffin to say goodbye. Perhaps her heart couldn\u2019t bear it \u2013 sorrow, grief, fear, all those emotions that people so often hide live openly in animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The old man sank to his knees, and the tears finally broke through. Not just for Liza. But also for how even animals say goodbye more sincerely than people. How they feel more than we\u2019re willing to admit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lea lay beside the girl, as if guarding her on her final journey.<\/p>\n\n\n
