When my mother-in-law said that some relatives from the village were coming, I was actually a bit happy \u2014 just some old aunts for a couple of days, they\u2019d drink some tea, chat, and leave. I didn\u2019t mind. Until she suddenly said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014 They\u2019ll sleep in your room. In your bed. It\u2019s cozier there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first, I didn\u2019t even realize what I had just heard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014 Excuse me? In my<\/em> room? In my<\/em> bed? And where do you expect me to sleep?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She looked at me like I was the most selfish person in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n

All my polite objections hit a brick wall. She was already carrying pillows and blankets into my<\/em> room. The guests were already standing in the hallway, admiring the interior like they had stepped into Versailles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I tried to suggest that we had a sofa in the living room and an air mattress, but she cut me off:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014 Those old folks from the village would destroy their backs on the sofa! And there\u2019s a draft in there! End of discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was shaking with anger. I dragged my blanket into the kitchen and felt like a stranger in my own house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the more I thought about it, the clearer it became: this was not okay. Do I really have to endure humiliation in the name of \u201crespect for guests\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the cupboard, I had a little bottle of peppermint essential oil. Very concentrated. I poured a good amount onto the pillows and sheets while the guests were in the bathroom.<\/p>\n\n\n

Within a minute, the room was filled with such a strong smell that it made your eyes burn and breathing hard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then I quietly placed an aroma lamp next to the bed\u2026 filled with vinegar. Yes, the kind that \u201cmelts your brain.\u201d I turned it on and left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fifteen minutes later, the fun began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the guests ran out of the room coughing and waving her hands:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014 It stinks in there! I can\u2019t open my eyes!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My mother-in-law walked in, came out five seconds later holding her nose:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014 Oh my God, what is that smell?!<\/p>\n\n\n

\u2014 Oh, I don\u2019t know \u2014 I shrugged. \u2014 Maybe the ventilation. Or the old mattress. I\u2019ve always slept in the kitchen, never noticed anything\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the end, the guests moved to the living room. And my mother-in-law, proudly claiming she \u201cdoesn\u2019t care where she sleeps,\u201d went to the kitchen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And me? I lay down in my bed. Opened the window. Turned on the fan. And slept like a princess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
