There hadn\u2019t been a permanent literature teacher in the 10th grade for a while. One went on maternity leave, another quit after just a month. When Anna showed up \u2014 young, calm, neat \u2014 the students exchanged glances:
\u201cAnother one\u2026 She won\u2019t last long.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first lesson started off as a test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014 Alright, open your notebooks\u2026 \u2014 the teacher began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014 We didn\u2019t bring any! \u2014 someone yelled from the back row. Laughter.<\/p>\n\n\n

\u2014 Alright. Anna\u2026 \u2014 she said calmly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014 Smells like perfume from the last century, and those glasses \u2014 just like grandma\u2019s! \u2014 the laughter grew louder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone played the sound of a donkey braying on their phone. The class burst out laughing. While she was explaining something at the board, one student threw a paper airplane at her back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The teacher turned around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014 Gonna cry and run off like the last one? \u2014 someone whispered, loud enough for her to hear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone exaggerated a yawn and dropped their textbook loudly to the floor. Others followed \u2014 books fell, chairs creaked, and someone openly scrolled through TikTok on their tablet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, unexpectedly, Anna sat down on the edge of her desk and said softly, almost casually\u2026 The entire class froze at her words\u2026 Continued in the first comment \"\ud83d\udc47\"\"\ud83d\udc47\"<\/p>\n\n\n

\u2014 You know, I wasn\u2019t always a teacher. Exactly a year ago, I worked in an oncology ward for teenagers. They were your age. Some of them just wanted to live long enough to graduate. Everything mattered to them: books, poems, just having someone to talk to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014 One boy, 17 years old. Diagnosis \u2014 sarcoma. We read books out loud together because he could no longer speak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The class quieted down a bit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014 He held onto the book even when his fingers stopped working. He told me, \u201cI wish I had loved books earlier. Now I\u2019d give anything just to\u2026 sit in a regular class. Without an IV.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The room grew noticeably quieter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014 A girl from the next room \u2014 the teacher continued \u2014 dreamed of going to school. Just sitting in a real classroom. You guys\u2026 you\u2019re living their dream, but acting like life owes you something.<\/p>\n\n\n
