My husband, Dave, and I have always had a solid relationship. Sure, like most couples, there are ups and downs, but we handle them pretty well in general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Except when it comes to his mom, Margaret.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Margaret has a knack for inserting herself into our lives, often under the pretense of being helpful. She\u2019ll just drop by unannounced, often claiming to be worried about how I\u2019m taking care of her son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMel, it\u2019s just my mom\u2019s way of showing her love,\u201d Dave would say, dismissing it all. \u201cShe\u2019s always been so dramatic, and that\u2019s just one of those things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But to me, it just felt invasive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recently, things took quite a turn for the worse. I have a chronic condition that requires surgery on my spine. As a result, my doctor has put me on a strict pre-surgery diet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not going to be great, Mel,\u201d he told me when I went for my last check-up. \u201cBut it\u2019s necessary, I promise you. We need you to cut down on your body weight so that after the surgery, the stress on your spine will be less.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I understood the assignment, and I was committed to my health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLook, honey,\u201d I told Dave when I went home after my appointment. \u201cYou don\u2019t have to change your diet at all. I\u2019ll still get you everything you want to eat, and cook what you want, too. But there\u2019s a bunch of food that I have to avoid.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo,\u201d my husband reassured me. \u201cI\u2019ll do it with you. Just put the list of forbidden items on the fridge, and I\u2019ll know what to avoid.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had to admit, I was surprised by Dave. This man loved his fried food. The greasier the better when it came to my husband\u2019s diet. But this change was good for both of us, and I loved that he was being supportive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, we began diligently avoiding sugar, limiting carbs, and eating lots of greens and lean proteins. It was quite a lifestyle change, because now I had to be strict about everything I put into my mouth. But I knew that it was going to be worth it in the end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But then, Margaret turned up like a storm about the disrupt our peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last weekend, as I was reading in our home office, Margaret showed up with bags full of groceries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without even asking, she started preparing Dave\u2019s favorite meal: fried chicken, mashed potatoes drenched in butter, and a decadent chocolate cake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDo you need any help?\u201d I asked her when I realized that she was about to cook up a storm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo, darling,\u201d she said. \u201cYou go and relax; I\u2019m fine here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, I let her take over the kitchen. The aroma filled the house, and I felt my stomach rumble. But I knew that I couldn\u2019t eat any of it. On one hand, I felt that Margaret was being inappropriate, but on the other hand, I was glad that Dave was getting some good food that he enjoyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When dinner was ready, I politely declined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d she asked, looking at the food that I laid out on the counter, ready to make myself dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere\u2019s more than enough food, Mel. You don\u2019t need to make more,\u201d she huffed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m just making my dinner,\u201d I said slowly. \u201cAs incredible as your meal smells and looks, I can\u2019t eat any of it. I\u2019m on a strict diet for my surgery. I cannot afford to have any slip-ups.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of understanding the situation like any rational person, my mother-in-law\u2019s face twisted in displeasure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh, come on, Mel,\u201d she said. \u201cI worked really hard on this meal. Just a little won\u2019t hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI appreciate it, and I\u2019m so grateful that you\u2019re here and that you cooked this meal for Dave, but I just cannot risk it. This surgery is too important,\u201d I insisted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cue the meltdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She started muttering under her breath about how ungrateful I was, making a big show of serving Dave a heaping plate of food. I felt a knot form in my stomach, not from hunger, but from the tension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I couldn\u2019t believe it. He was the person who didn\u2019t mind changing up his diet and his routine because he wanted to support me. What was this? What was this change of behavior?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh, please,\u201d she scoffed. \u201cYou\u2019re just being overly dramatic. People have been eating real food like this for centuries without all these modern health scares.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I could feel the heat rise in my blood. My anger was building, and so was my disappointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But before things could escalate further, the doorbell rang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was George, my father-in-law, dropping by to pick up some tools. He walked into the kitchen just as Margaret was going on about how I was \u201ctoo good\u201d for her cooking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

George surveyed the scene quickly and then looked directly at Margaret.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMargaret, you know she\u2019s on a diet for her surgery. This isn\u2019t about politeness or niceties. It\u2019s about Mel\u2019s health. She has been trying to sort out her spine issues for years now, Marg, you know this,\u201d he said. \u201cYou need to respect that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Margaret opened her mouth to argue, but George didn\u2019t give her a chance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was stunned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

George had never intervened in these situations before, and to see him take such a strong stance was both surprising and incredibly comforting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Margaret stormed out of the dining room, clearly upset, but George stayed behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh, gosh,\u201d my husband muttered, putting his piece of chicken down as he pushed his chair back to run after his mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

George turned to me with a kind smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou did the right thing. Don\u2019t worry about Margaret; she\u2019ll come around,\u201d he said. \u201cYour health is so important.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dave came running back in, looking thoroughly chastened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d he said. \u201cI shouldn\u2019t have said anything or tried to force you to eat any of this. I just didn\u2019t want to upset Mom, but I realize now that I should have supported you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

George nodded approvingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While I was in the kitchen, I saw Margaret sitting on the bench outside. I could have gone to her, but I hated the way she had spoken to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
