A snobbish mother is upset when her son wants to marry a poor girl, and throws her parents out of the wedding because they don\u2019t look posh enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Clara Wellington\u2019s son came home from college and told her he wanted to marry a poor girl from Montana, she was horrified. \u201cBut who are her parents?\u201d she asked. \u201cWhat do they do?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat does it matter?\u201d her son Brad asked. \u201cI love Frannie, and that is all that matters to me.\u201d Clara pressed her lips together. Of course, birth and status mattered, they mattered a lot! At least to Clara, they were everything!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Clara and her husband, Brad Senior, met Frannie Heckle and her parents, all her worst expectations were confirmed. Clara supposed the Heckles were what her father-in-law would have called \u2018salt-of-the-earth\u2019 people, but not what she wanted as her son\u2019s in-laws!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Heckle was a tall, burly man who wore a light blue suit that pouched at the knees and elbows, and Mrs. Heckle favored painfully bright floral house dresses and white plastic shoes\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clara shuddered. They would have to do something about their clothes! She wasn\u2019t having them spoiling the wedding by looking like the hicks they so obviously were! She said as much to her husband and his reply surprised her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLeave them alone, Clara,\u201d Brad Senior had said in a cold voice he seldom used with her. \u201cBrad loves this girl, and these are good, genuine people who care for him. What they wear doesn\u2019t matter!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clara was angered by her husband\u2019s refusal to see how very important it was to give the right impression, to present the right image. Her son would one day be a wealthy man, with a place in the city\u2019s high society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People would be talking about this wedding for years and Clara was determined that it would be an absolute success \u2014 there would be no snide remarks or criticism of her only son\u2019s wedding!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clara invited Mrs. Heckle and Frannie out to lunch, and carefully explained to the two women that what they wore was VERY important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMrs. Heckle, I think you should rethink your image. You should go to Bloomingdales, there are some quite acceptable off-the-rack clothes that won\u2019t be too expensive that would give you and your husband the right look.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Frannie and her mother looked at each other. \u201cI can\u2019t afford things like that, Mrs. Wellington,\u201d said Mrs. Heckle firmly. \u201cI already bought my dress.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clara pressed her lips together. \u201cWell, Mrs. Heckle, I just wanted to talk to you about it because there IS going to be a dress code!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mrs. Heckle frowned. \u201cI\u2019ll wear what I like, and no one will tell me different!\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell, since I\u2019m paying for the wedding, I beg to disagree!\u201d Clara snapped. Things might have gotten very unpleasant if Brad hadn\u2019t arrived just then, and put a damper on the discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Clara had an idea. She smiled to herself: \u201cWhy don\u2019t I just get the help to take out the trash?\u201d She had a plan, and it was in effect on the wedding day. Mr. and Mrs. Heckle arrived at the Wellington estate (the wedding was to be held in the garden) and were confronted by a security guard in a smart black suit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The security guard took one look at Mr. Heckle\u2019s checked brown suit and Mrs. Heckle\u2019s flounced polka dot dress and stopped them. \u201cExcuse me,\u201d he said politely, \u201cI\u2019m afraid you can\u2019t go in.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are the bride\u2019s parents!\u201d Mr. Heckle said. \u201cWe have to go in.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry, sir,\u201d said the security guard. \u201cBut there is a dress code and I was instructed not to let anyone not in compliance in\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d asked Mr. Heckle angrily, \u201cI demand to see Mr. and Mrs. Wellington!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The security guard looked at Mrs. Heckle\u2019s bright pink and yellow print dress and winced. \u201cMrs. Wellington warned me some trashy people would try to get in, I\u2019m acting on her direct orders!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTrashy?\u201d cried Mrs. Heckles, \u201cWhat do you mean trashy?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The security guard threw Mr. and Mrs. Heckle a scornful glance. \u201cIf you have to ask\u2026\u201d he sneered, \u201cNow off with you, back to the trailer park you escaped from!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mrs. Heckle started to cry and Mr. Heckle put his arm around her. They were walking away from their own daughter\u2019s wedding because the security guard called them trailer trash!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was then that Brad Senior arrived. \u201cWhat\u2019s going on?\u201d he asked, and when the security guard told him, he got very, very angry. \u201cCome with me,\u201d he said to the Heckles and led them inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Upstairs he ushered them into his dressing room and gave Mr. Heckle one of his tuxedos, then stepped into Clara\u2019s wardrobe and pulled out a fabulous dress and shoes. \u201cHere,\u201d he told Mrs. Heckle. \u201cIt might be a bit big on you, but it should be alright!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Twenty minutes later, Mr. and Mrs. Heckle walked into the silk tent in which the wedding was to be held, and at first, Clara didn\u2019t recognize them, then she gasped. Mrs. Heckel was wearing an Armani dress she hadn\u2019t even worn yet!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That was HER dress! Clara opened her mouth to protest and then she saw the look in her husband\u2019s eye. She smiled graciously and nodded at the Heckles and the wedding march began to play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The wedding was in full swing when the best man announced the toasts, and first up was Brad Senior. He picked up the microphone and smiled at the bride and groom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFrannie,\u201d he said. \u201cI want to welcome you to our family! You are everything I hoped my son would find in a wife \u2014 a kind, loving woman. That matters more than anything else, even money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut in case you\u2019re worried about that, let me tell you that marrying poor girls is something of a family tradition. You know, Brad, when I married your mother, she didn\u2019t have two cents to rub together! She wasn\u2019t even wearing shoes!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clara listened in horror, then as the high society people around her started to sneak peeks at her and snicker, she turned and ran out of the tent and into the garden. She had never felt so ashamed in her life!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was sobbing on a garden bench when she felt a gentle hand on her head. \u201cMrs. Wellington?\u201d Clara looked up and saw Frannie looking down at her. \u201cPlease, don\u2019t cry, it\u2019s OK!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m so humiliated\u2026\u201d Clara sobbed. \u201cThe things Brad said\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou should be proud of your origins, Mrs. Wellington,\u201d Frannie said quietly. \u201cI think you\u2019re an extremely elegant woman. I have a lot to learn, and I know if I can learn as well as you, Brad will be proud of me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clara looked at Frannie\u2019s sweet, kind face and said, \u201cFrannie, there\u2019s nothing I can teach you. You are already more gracious than I have ever been, and Brad is already proud of you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Frannie smiled. \u201cNevertheless, I want us to be friends,\u201d she said. \u201cYou see, we both love Brad more than anything and that is a wonderful thing to share!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clara went back to the tent on Frannie\u2019s arm, braved the sly looks from her posh friends, and danced all night. Towards the end her feet were sore and she took off her shoes and didn\u2019t care what anyone thought at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
